A series of short workshops for BMC members to help address skill fade.

This series of short workshops for walkers and climbers is solely for BMC members and proof of membership is required.

The three workshops are Navigation refresher, Building Better Belays and Self and Improvised rescue. The workshops are not suitable for beginners.

Navigation Refresher

Suitable for those who have forgotten the finer points of navigation. After a quick chat we head out. We refresh map orientation, bearings and pacing before looking at more complex navigational strategies and if all goes to plan finding a few points in the dark. Head torches will be required!

This workshop will start at 1830, is approximately 3 hrs long and will finish at around 2130. It will run at a 1:8 instructor ratio.

Build Better Belays

Suitable for those who are already lead climbing on trad routes. We will revise gear placements and critically how to link it all together to provide a safe and efficient belay. We will also look at some common belay mistakes and how to avoid them.

This workshop will start at 1830 is approximately 2.5 hrs long and will finish at around 2100. It will run at a 1:6 instructor ratio.

Self & Improvised Rescue

Suitable for climbers who can already create safe belays and abseil. We will revise how to abseil safely and look at how we pass a knot in descent. We then look at how to ascend ropes if required. Finally we cover how to lock off a stranded climber and escape the system to go for help.

This workshop will start at 1830 is approximately 2.5 hrs long and will finish at around 2100. It will run at a 1:6 instructor ratio.

All three workshops will run on the same set of dates which are:

Meeting Point

The workshops will meet near Hathersage at 1830. The meeting point will be accessible by public transport.

Booking

To express your interest please use the contact form and state, your name, contact email, BMC Membership number (or which BMC affiliated club you belong to) and which workshop you would like on which date.

Once checked for eligibility, bookings will be allocated on a first come first served basis and if you are successful we will send you further details of the workshop including its meeting point location.

Equipment required

You should come fully equipped for your chosen activity. The workshops will run regardless of the weather so warm and waterproof clothing is essential.

For navigation this includes a Dark Peak map and compass.

For climbing workshops you will require a rack, rope, harness and helmet. We have a no helmet = no climb policy. By all means bring stickies but it is unlikely we will have time for an actual climb.

Experience

These workshops are to help address skill fade. They are revision and not designed to teach you from scratch. If you wish to upskill yourself, please look at the wide variety of courses on this website. There are discounted courses for BMC members in both walking and climbing as well as non discounted courses and adventures.
