Advanced Scrambling Course

£195 per person

2 days

Max. Ratio:

This course is for confident hillwalkers with some experience of either scrambling or climbing who want to develop their skills and experiences to cope with more demanding scrambles. It is also a great way to learn or refresh the skills required for movement over alpine type terrain as a roped pair in preparation for a trip to Skye, the Alps or the Greater ranges.

Over the course of the two days you will move over some of the most iconic mountain terrain in the UK, developing your skills and confidence as you progress. As Beyond the Edge have a genuine passion for the mountains, if the weather is kind we won’t rush off the hill and with the volume of high quality scrambles available – well we might just sneak another one in. So pop an extra snack in your bag and don’t book an early evening meal as we seek to get the most out of each day.

  • How to choose a route appropriate to your skill level and the weather conditions;
  • How to navigate to and away from your chosen route;
  • The black art of route finding;
  • Basic rope work;
  • Safe and efficient movement on the route;
  • Abseiling and retreating from routes.

There are a huge variety of high quality routes available, possible scrambles are:

Chasm Face (Glyder Fach)
A grade 3, three star route that combines airy scrambling with a touch of caving. Pack a torch and good humour for an epically memorable day out.

Dolmen Ridge (Glyder Fach)
Another grade 3, three star route on Glyder Fach although without any caving!

Clogwyn y Person Arete
A grade 2/3, three star scramble that encompasses excellent climbing and a traverse of Crib Coch on the descent back into Llanberis pass.

You certainly don’t have to be super fit to enjoy this course, and a good general fitness is quite sufficient. Some upper body fitness is required for Advanced scrambling but if you are pulling on your arms all day you are doing something wrong – we will teach you the correct techniques and its all about the footwork not the arms. Probably the biggest requirement, regardless of course is a reasonable head for heights. There is lots contained in the joining instructions to help you prepare and get the most out of the course.
