Getting into Rock Climbing Outdoors Part 1

Chris Allewell

Part 1: Couch to crag Rock Climbing outdoors is incredibly exciting and rewarding, and logistically-speaking there’s a little more to it than climbing at a purpose-built climbing wall. Working out where you’re going and how you’re getting there are good starting points, but there are loads of extra things you can do to ensure a…

Emergency Shelter Review

Chris Allewell

Emergency Shelter review The media loves a headline and “The bivy bag probably saved their lives” was a great one provided by Willie Anderson, leader of Cairngorm MRT, following a successful search for a couple who became benighted in the Cairngorms last year. Many people are however unaware of how to use a bivy bag…

Top tips for night navigation

Chris Allewell

As the nights start to draw in, the chances of having to do some navigation in the dark increase. Far from being something to fear, night navigation can be great fun. Compass navigation at night can be a challenge as sighting on objects to keep on bearing has to occur over shorter distances and features…

Expedition base layers

Chris Allewell

So much depends on getting the basics right and in this context the basics are what you wear next to your skin ie your expedition base layers. On an expedition the same couple of tops will be on for pretty much every day so they need to work. I have been using Patagonia tops as…

Scarpa Ribelle Mountain Tech OD review

Chris Allewell

Rule number 0.5 in mountaineering is look cool and the reflective piping and orange stripes of the Scarpa Ribelle Mountain Tech OD certainly draw attention to themselves. Whilst the only time I have looked cool was stuck in a blizzard in Alaska, wearing these boots is about as close as I will get to cool…

Scrambling in Snowdonia Guidebook Competition

Chris Allewell

Scrambling In Snowdonia Cicerone have just released an updated version of their classic guidebook Scrambles in Snowdonia. Being honest, it was desperately needed as guidebooks have moved on and The Gary Smith North Wales Scrambles was far superior to the old version. Both ourselves and our clients have been enjoying the amazing scrambles in these…

Can Climbing Be Used to Treat Depression?

Chris Allewell

Alleviating Depression through Climbing I’m feeling the need to get out on rock. There is an Interesting article here from the American magazine Climbing talking about how rock climbing can be used to focus the mind and help with mental health and alleviate depression https://www.climbing.com/news/can-climbing-be-used-to-treat-depression/ I don’t know about true depression, but I do know that…

Happy New Year

Happy New Year, Here in the Peak District the weather hasn’t been too bad the last few days. A sunny run up Kinder Scout in Springtime temperatures on Friday, was followed by a very blustery but dry walk with a group of Scouts who had travelled up from London to sample the delights of the…

Scarpa R Evo Review November 17 update – the new model in fetching blue and grey rather than funky orange – is just as good judging by the last month in some pretty cold and wet conditions. The older ones didn’t make it back from Nepal, but they didn’t owe me anything… A very comfortable…

Night Navigation

Chris Allewell

Night navigation is a great way to hone your navigation skills. With the longer hours of darkness, you don’t even need to crawl into bed at 2am after a few hours on the hill. Book a navigation and map reading course with Beyond the Edge to give you the confidence to have a winter filled…

Aspirant Mountain Leaders rounding off their train Aspirant Mountain Leaders rounding off their training course with the expedition, where they spent a night camping in the mountains and hone their night navigation and camp craft.

The expedition can be the most enriching and rewarding element of your Mountain Leader training and assessment.

It’s certainly the main event and there’s no denying that your bag will be heavier, you will probably feel tired and you will probably be obliged to emerge from your tent in the night for poor visibility navigation.

On the flip side, it’s an incredible learning experience in managing yourself, your well-being in what can often be quite challenging conditions. It’s an opportunity to refine your camp craft, sort all your systems, and have a good old nosey at other people’s tents, stoves and camp cuisine. We learn through challenge after all!

For some the ML training is a step in their journey to a career outdoors, for others it’s an opportunity to learn to look after themselves and friends/family in the mountain environment. Whatever your motivation, you can learn more about the award and courses on our website.

What is CPD and why is it important? CPD means c What is CPD and why is it important?

CPD means continued professional/personal development. For qualified and aspirant leaders it helps to keep your skills fresh and demonstrate to others (including employers) that you are passionate about good practice, good standards and professionalism.

It's something you might also think about doing for your own personal growth and safety, whether you're heading out as a leader or an individual.

CPD might be reading and listening to books, heading out with friends to practise night nav or attending a workshop. Workshops are great spaces to share skills, ask questions and reflect on previous experiences.

We offer CPD workshops for both personal and professional development, these include:

🌼🐦Environmental workshops
🏥Advanced/Expedition First Aid
🏥Outdoor First Aid
🧗Problem Solving and Self-Rescue for climbers
🌄 ML/HML nav refresher
🧭NNAS tutor award

How was your half term? We trained 3 cohorts of How was your half term?

We trained 3 cohorts of Hill and Moorland Leaders, a cohort of CWDIs and a group of NNAS Gold navigators.

We enjoyed rain and shine on our Peak District Guided walking holiday whilst Claire and James opted for guaranteed sun in Finale Ligure (Italy).

Alex found fungi in the woods, Hati found a particularly interesting owl pellet and Chris found a Violet Oil Beetle.

Most importantly, no sandwiches were eaten by sheep (which was on the cards from a little while). 🥪🐑

What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mounta What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mountaineering week?

A quick winter hit, featuring easily accessible high alpine walking, inspiring mountains, and the warm welcoming Berber culture.
You’ll be with one of our core team, accompanied by a local english speaking guide. You’ll start by refreshing and refining winter skills before exploring the 4000m peaks around our high mountain refuge.

Generally our itinerary is flexible (according to the weather - as always!) but you can expect something that looks like this…

Day 1 - Arrive Marrakech and transfer to Imlil (approx 2 hours). Overnight in gîte.
Day 2 – Acclimatisation trek in mountains surrounding Imlil. Overnight in gîte.
Day 3 – Ascend to refuge at 3207m. A slow walk that takes between 5-7 hours depending on conditions. Mules and porters will carry the group’s equipment and we’ll stay overnight at the refuge.
Day 4 – Winter skills refresher and acclimatisation. Another night in the refuge.
Day 5 – Climb Toubkal or another 4000m peak. Another night in the refuge.
Day 6 – Another day of winter fun. Toubkal if not climbed yesterday or another summit eg Ras n’ Ouanoukrim (4088m), Timesguida (4088m) and plenty of others! Return to Imlil.
Day 7 – Transfer to Marrakech in the morning with an afternoon at leisure to explore Marrakech. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8 – Transfer to airport and fly home. Often our flights are in the early afternoon allowing us to further explore Marrakech before our flight.
