Hill and Moorland Leader FAQs
What is the Difference Between Hill and Moorland Leader and Mountain Leader?
The Hill and Moorland Leader qualification allows you to lead groups on day walks in lowland, hill, and moorland terrain in the UK and Ireland. It does not cover steep, rocky, or mountainous terrain.
The Mountain Leader qualification is a higher-level award that qualifies you to lead groups in more challenging mountain environments, including steeper ground and remote terrain.
In short, Hill and Moorland Leader is intended for countryside and hills, while Mountain Leader is for more technical mountain environments.
What is a Quality Hillwalking Day (QHD)?
A Quality Hillwalking Day (QHD) is a day spent in the hills where you take responsibility for planning, navigation, and decision-making.
A typical QHD includes:
- At least 4 hours in hill or moorland terrain
- Active use of a map and compass
- Route planning and adjustments during the day
- Exposure to a range of terrain and conditions
QHDs are a key requirement for progressing through the Hill and Moorland Leader qualification, helping you build the real-world experience needed for training and assessment.
How Much Does a Hill and Moorland Leader Course Cost?
Costs vary depending on whether you’re booking training, assessment, or additional modules. Prices typically range from a few hundred pounds per course, with bespoke options available for groups.
Take a look at our individual course pages above for exact costs for each course.
How Do I Complete the Hill and Moorland Leader Assessment?
