It seems fitting that our 100th blog post should be about Alex featuring in the celebratory 100th of the legendary Japanese climbing magazine Rock & Snow.   Alex’s photo of Toru Nakajima climbing the Millstone E8 was featured on the cover of the issue. This issue also included Alex’s account of Toru’s incredible tour of…

‘Hard is Easy’ GriGri Videos Over the last few months I’ve had climbers on my Climbing Wall Instructor and Rock Climbing Instructor training and assessment courses mention the ‘Hard is Easy’ YouTube channel. The chatter especially mentions the Hard is Easy GriGri videos and in particular the videos on GriGri slippage and failure. Ben has…

Hawke Frontier 8×42 ED X Binocular Review For the last few years my trusty Opticron Discovery WP PC 8×32 binoculars have given me enormous pleasure on the hill. They are a great travel option being pretty much the smallest, lightest 8x32s around and representing great optical performance for the money. However, as a big birthday…

Patagonia Baggies Review Patagonia have from their inception manufactured items of clothing that remain in their collection for decades and become icons of the brand. Classic examples include Stand Up Shorts, the Snap T Pullover and Baggies Shorts. Patagonia released the ‘Baggies’ in 1982. Designed by Yvon Chouinard the Baggies have remained relatively unchanged in…

MSR Reactor Review A long term use review of the MSR Reactor stove system. An excellent gas stove for Alpine use, Wild Camping and Bivouacs. Buffalo Mountain Shirt Review As a keen outdoors person, I love being out and about in all weathers, in the UK and beyond. The downside of this is layer management. Gloves for Scottish Winter Walking and Mountaineering When your hands are cold they don’t work well, so gloves are an essential part of your Scottish winter kit. Firstly, no one glove will work all day, in all weather conditions so you will definitely need more than one pair. We recommend thinking about your gloves as…

Winter climbing partners never move fast enough! From my perspective I have just completed a lightning fast accent on a thin runout smear of ice then undertook the cleaning of iced up cracks with poise and precision to build a structurally satisfying anchor. All this done in record breaking time.  Why then, is my partner…

What is CPD and why is it important? CPD means c What is CPD and why is it important?

CPD means continued professional/personal development. For qualified and aspirant leaders it helps to keep your skills fresh and demonstrate to others (including employers) that you are passionate about good practice, good standards and professionalism.

It's something you might also think about doing for your own personal growth and safety, whether you're heading out as a leader or an individual.

CPD might be reading and listening to books, heading out with friends to practise night nav or attending a workshop. Workshops are great spaces to share skills, ask questions and reflect on previous experiences.

We offer CPD workshops for both personal and professional development, these include:

🌼🐦Environmental workshops
🏥Advanced/Expedition First Aid
🏥Outdoor First Aid
🧗Problem Solving and Self-Rescue for climbers
🌄 ML/HML nav refresher
🧭NNAS tutor award
💪Understanding Fear and Anxiety in your clients

How was your half term? We trained 3 cohorts of How was your half term?

We trained 3 cohorts of Hill and Moorland Leaders, a cohort of CWDIs and a group of NNAS Gold navigators.

We enjoyed rain and shine on our Peak District Guided walking holiday whilst Claire and James opted for guaranteed sun in Finale Ligure (Italy).

Alex found fungi in the woods, Hati found a particularly interesting owl pellet and Chris found a Violet Oil Beetle.

Most importantly, no sandwiches were eaten by sheep (which was on the cards from a little while). 🥪🐑

What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mounta What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mountaineering week?

A quick winter hit, featuring easily accessible high alpine walking, inspiring mountains, and the warm welcoming Berber culture.
You’ll be with one of our core team, accompanied by a local english speaking guide. You’ll start by refreshing and refining winter skills before exploring the 4000m peaks around our high mountain refuge.

Generally our itinerary is flexible (according to the weather - as always!) but you can expect something that looks like this…

Day 1 - Arrive Marrakech and transfer to Imlil (approx 2 hours). Overnight in gîte.
Day 2 – Acclimatisation trek in mountains surrounding Imlil. Overnight in gîte.
Day 3 – Ascend to refuge at 3207m. A slow walk that takes between 5-7 hours depending on conditions. Mules and porters will carry the group’s equipment and we’ll stay overnight at the refuge.
Day 4 – Winter skills refresher and acclimatisation. Another night in the refuge.
Day 5 – Climb Toubkal or another 4000m peak. Another night in the refuge.
Day 6 – Another day of winter fun. Toubkal if not climbed yesterday or another summit eg Ras n’ Ouanoukrim (4088m), Timesguida (4088m) and plenty of others! Return to Imlil.
Day 7 – Transfer to Marrakech in the morning with an afternoon at leisure to explore Marrakech. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8 – Transfer to airport and fly home. Often our flights are in the early afternoon allowing us to further explore Marrakech before our flight.

Our Rock Climbing Camps are a summer holiday highl Our Rock Climbing Camps are a summer holiday highlight, running throughout July and August for young people aged 14 - 17.

🧗Every year new cohorts of young climbers join us to climb, boulder, camp and build friendships with new climbing partners ready for the next adventure. The Peak District is a climbing hub with some of the best crags, boulders and routes in the country.

⛺The camp is residential at a campsite (with hot showers) at the base of Stanage Edge in the Peak District. All food is provided by us and prepared by the young people under our supervision. Our instructors are on site at all times, making this an ideal first camp experience for young people.

🚄The camp runs from Monday - Friday and young people can get here by train to Hathersage or get dropped off.
