Best Leatherman for ‘Alone’

Alex

Best Leatherman for ‘Alone’ We’ve enjoyed watching ‘Alone’ on Channel 4, the UK version of the longstanding American survival show. 11 contestants were left alone on land around the Mackenzie River, in the Dehcho region of Northwest Territories, Canada. They arrive with no food and have to see how long they can last by hunting, fishing and…

Leatherman Signal Review

Harriet Whiteley

I’ve never really been that into knives and multitools. I own a few Opinels and have always taken my Opinel no8 (the outdoor knife) out with me as it’s light, small and because of its plastic handle needs less care than my wooden Opinels. So it was a little overwhelming to receive a Leatherman Signal…

Leatherman Signal First Impressions

Alex

The first thing I noticed about the Signal is how much the Leatherman designs have evolved since I bought my first one in the mid 1990’s. It was a Leatherman Mini Tool which I carried for Ice Climbing, Scottish winter and Alpine mountaineering and expeditions. It was small, very strong, simple, a bit crude but…

A review of the Leatherman Skeletool CX. One of our most popular blogs of 2021 was How to Choose a Knife for Walking, Climbing and Mountaineering. In this article we recommended carrying a multitool for Scottish winter mountaineering. The ability to quickly repair a crampon is essential so a tool with pliers and screwdrivers is very…

Alex

On every Rock Climbing Instructor or Lowland, Hill and Moorland or Mountain Leader course at some point someone will ask the perfectly reasonable question ‘should I carry a knife?’ The short answer is maybe! A knife is a tool like any other item of outdoor equipment and you need to have a think about what…

What is CPD and why is it important? CPD means c What is CPD and why is it important?

CPD means continued professional/personal development. For qualified and aspirant leaders it helps to keep your skills fresh and demonstrate to others (including employers) that you are passionate about good practice, good standards and professionalism.

It's something you might also think about doing for your own personal growth and safety, whether you're heading out as a leader or an individual.

CPD might be reading and listening to books, heading out with friends to practise night nav or attending a workshop. Workshops are great spaces to share skills, ask questions and reflect on previous experiences.

We offer CPD workshops for both personal and professional development, these include:

🌼🐦Environmental workshops
🏥Advanced/Expedition First Aid
🏥Outdoor First Aid
🧗Problem Solving and Self-Rescue for climbers
🌄 ML/HML nav refresher
🧭NNAS tutor award

How was your half term? We trained 3 cohorts of How was your half term?

We trained 3 cohorts of Hill and Moorland Leaders, a cohort of CWDIs and a group of NNAS Gold navigators.

We enjoyed rain and shine on our Peak District Guided walking holiday whilst Claire and James opted for guaranteed sun in Finale Ligure (Italy).

Alex found fungi in the woods, Hati found a particularly interesting owl pellet and Chris found a Violet Oil Beetle.

Most importantly, no sandwiches were eaten by sheep (which was on the cards from a little while). 🥪🐑

What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mounta What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mountaineering week?

A quick winter hit, featuring easily accessible high alpine walking, inspiring mountains, and the warm welcoming Berber culture.
You’ll be with one of our core team, accompanied by a local english speaking guide. You’ll start by refreshing and refining winter skills before exploring the 4000m peaks around our high mountain refuge.

Generally our itinerary is flexible (according to the weather - as always!) but you can expect something that looks like this…

Day 1 - Arrive Marrakech and transfer to Imlil (approx 2 hours). Overnight in gîte.
Day 2 – Acclimatisation trek in mountains surrounding Imlil. Overnight in gîte.
Day 3 – Ascend to refuge at 3207m. A slow walk that takes between 5-7 hours depending on conditions. Mules and porters will carry the group’s equipment and we’ll stay overnight at the refuge.
Day 4 – Winter skills refresher and acclimatisation. Another night in the refuge.
Day 5 – Climb Toubkal or another 4000m peak. Another night in the refuge.
Day 6 – Another day of winter fun. Toubkal if not climbed yesterday or another summit eg Ras n’ Ouanoukrim (4088m), Timesguida (4088m) and plenty of others! Return to Imlil.
Day 7 – Transfer to Marrakech in the morning with an afternoon at leisure to explore Marrakech. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8 – Transfer to airport and fly home. Often our flights are in the early afternoon allowing us to further explore Marrakech before our flight.

Our Rock Climbing Camps are a summer holiday highl Our Rock Climbing Camps are a summer holiday highlight, running throughout July and August for young people aged 14 - 17.

🧗Every year new cohorts of young climbers join us to climb, boulder, camp and build friendships with new climbing partners ready for the next adventure. The Peak District is a climbing hub with some of the best crags, boulders and routes in the country.

⛺The camp is residential at a campsite (with hot showers) at the base of Stanage Edge in the Peak District. All food is provided by us and prepared by the young people under our supervision. Our instructors are on site at all times, making this an ideal first camp experience for young people.

🚄The camp runs from Monday - Friday and young people can get here by train to Hathersage or get dropped off.

We recently ran our first Managing Fear of Heights We recently ran our first Managing Fear of Heights course in collaboration with psychologist, therapist and coach @davidfongpsychology . Rather than wax lyrical about how it went we thought we'd share some feedback from participants instead.

For some it might be a reluctance to use an escalator, for others, it might be that burning desire to conquer that rocky ridge – if only it wasn’t so steep… It doesn’t matter what your starting point is...

Our Managing Your Fear of Heights course is about understanding fear as a completely natural and appropriate response and learning how to manage the irrational element and celebrate the rational – it keeps us safe!

Our next course runs on Saturday 13 - Sunday 14 September. Learn more about it on our website (link in bio).
