Toubkal Winter Mountaineering
Kerry reflects on her highlights from our Toubkal expedition last December. Our next available expeditions are Saturday 3 – Saturday 10 January 2026 and Sat 12 – Sat 19 December 2026. Find out more here.
For me the riad (hotel) in Imlil was a highlight of the trip, as where you’re staying makes a big difference to rest and recovery. The riad itself was fairly small and felt like a quiet haven both before and after the trek. That said, it was also central to the town so you could walk out to do some shopping and get the feel for the place too.
Of course it’s great to get to the summit but I really enjoyed our acclimatisation days: much like a Scottish winter skills course but it was sunny, warm and nobody got wet through to the skin! You can run a Toubkal mountaineering course in less days but this means it’s all or bust in terms of the summit/weather and you only get one night in the refuge. I really appreciated the extra few days on this trip as it meant we could summit with the best weather/views and acclimatise at an enjoyable pace. It was a quick hit of winter sun!
I really enjoyed the food! (Obviously: I like food). But there was such a plethora of choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day and everyone ate really well.
As expeditions go, the Moroccan Winter Mountaineering course was a quick hit of winter sun!
