On this Sheffield walk Hati takes us on a 5 mile loop from Redmires Reservoirs to Stanage Edge. Walk or run this route at your leisure!

Up on the outskirts of Sheffield, the Redmires Reservoirs were built between 1833 – 1854 to provide clean drinking water for the ever-growing Sheffield population. Despite their clashing, crashing industrial beginnings, they are now somewhat of a peaceful beauty spot. They are also the starting point of a Sheffield walk Alex has dubbed the Redmires Round.

The Redmires Round: a 5 Mile Walking Route on the Outskirts of Sheffield
On the road about 400m east of the car park is this unusual stone which is the remains of the Grouse and Trout pub. The inscription translates as ‘I serve dinner’.
Remnants of World War 1 trench digging

Start from the carpark near the end of the upper reservoir (GR 246857), driving from Sheffield the car park is on the right about 400m past the Grouse and Trout stone. In the south east corner of the carpark is a gate, go through this and turn immediately left a footpath takes us north. Go through a gate and pass to the right of Hill Quarry. A closer look (and explore) of Hill Quarry and you’ll discover a lesser-known strand of Redmires’ history. The mounds are the remnants of a network of trenches dug between 1914 – 1916 by the Sheffield City Batallion as part of their training before being sent out to France (via Egypt) to fight in the first World War. You can find more information and some aerial photographs of the trench network here.

Rivelin Brook and High Lad Ridge

Around 1.5km from the car park we meet a conduit on its way to join the reservoirs. Here we turn left towards Rivelin Brook until we meet a small reservoir and a shooting hut. A vague path leads us to the left of the reservoir, crossing rightwards over a brook (you may get wet feet here) and up towards the small and sparse Oaking Clough plantation. From the far corner of the plantation head south west along a dry stone wall which guides you on your way past High Lad Ridge until it disappears to the left at the spot height 433m and you continue straight on in a more westerly direction. A small grouse hut a little before Stanage Edge is a good spot for a sheltered rest (with a view!).

Stanage Edge to Stanedge Pole

We reach Stanage at the High Neb area, and a left turn along the edge takes us back round towards Stanage Pole. After around 500m we reach the Long Causeway, thought to have once been a Medieval packhorse track and possibly a roman road. After another 500m a left fork follows the causeway back from the edge towards Stanage Pole (which, weather dependent, may be visible on the horizon) – the pole is a boundary line between South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. (Rumour has it that this boundary line is why Robin Hood and Little John sought shelter in a cave in the edge itself.)

From Stanage Pole a welcome descent leads you down and back to Redmires Road and the upper reservoir. Turn left at the road which takes you back to the carpark and the end of the Redmires Round.

We’d love to hear about it if you have walked this route, and especially if you took any detours!

If you enjoyed this, you may enjoy the Sheffield Round Walk, a 15 mile loop around South West Sheffield.

You may also enjoy one of our hillwalking courses, we are currently taking bookings for after 29th March.

What an exceptional day. James and Charlie were brilliant. We were a large family group and they tailored the whole day to meet our needs, with great knowledge and experience, bringing such fun along the way. Enjoyed by multi generations from my 7 year old daughter to her active grandparents who watched on. Thank you both, what a day.

Chris has a wealth of knowledge and experience which he shares in a fun, relaxed and easy to understand way. I would definately recommend his courses. I had a fantastic day out learning about not only the red deer and the dilemas a fungi identification but conservation issues and some great facts about trees.

Top team really! Completed my RCI training with Alex and Chris. Learned a ton. Completed my RCI assessment with Alex, learned even more. Then came back for outdoor first aid refresher with Chris and had an opportunity to learn from a real mountain rescuer who had a wealth of real life experience and knowledge. 10/10

I completed a two day Hill Skills course with Alex leading and Nigel assisting. There were seven of us with a range of experience and confidence. Alex and Nigel set a lovely tone with it being friendly, relaxed, interesting, and encouraging. We spent a couple of hours both mornings familiarising ourselves with the equipment and testing it out. Then went for a walk that utilised and challenged those skills. Everyone was really friendly and helpful throughout. If you don't know what taking a bearing is, an OS reference, how (or why) to use an emergency shelter, or pacing is, or know the difference between a path or a right of way on a map, then this course is for you. I just completed a two day Lowland Leader training course and used all of the skills from the Hill Skills on it!

I recently attended a NNAS silver award. The course was well organised from pre-course contact right through the two days. Claire who instructed the course was friendly, informative, and made sure I maximised my learning and experience for the weekend. Alex also instructed the second day and was equally great. I'd have no hesitation in attending another course with Beyond the edge and recommending them to others.

I did the two day climbing and rope skills course with Alex. It was excellent in every way. His immense experience and knowledge combined with a very patient approach and encouraging attitude delivered a course that was great fun, and full of first class learning. I look forward to doing the remainder of the trad course later this year. 2 months later I then did the two day learn to trad course with James. Again this course was excellent in every way. I look forward to doing more courses such as the multi pitch in Wales.

The learn to lead trad course exceeded my expectations. Plenty of practice after some short lessons, James was a brilliant instructor throughout who adapted the course to the goals and level of each student, gave excellent advice to us as individuals and the group, and has offered substantial after care as we consolidate the course material by leading climbs in our own time. Would recommend to anyone.

I have just completed the two day Hill Skills course and I can’t recommend it more highly. I’ve been hiking for years and have even done serious hikes like the three peaks, Dolomites and in Austria, but like many I’ve been relying on apps and my phone and knew it was really time to build a proper foundation for my hiking skills. I was blown away by how much I learned from our brilliant instructor Graham. From getting confident with map reading and plotting routes off the trails, to learning about mountain rescue and what to do if things go wrong, this course was packed with amazing info and hands on practical skills. I’ll now be looking to complete my Lowland Leader accreditation and will definitely be back to Beyond the Edge. Thanks again!
