Intermediate Rock Climbing

Intermediate rock climbing is a fun, highly practical two days on the world famous crags of the Peak District, learning from expert instructors. We teach you how safely place anchors and create a belay so you can climb independently.
No longer a beginner rock climber, an average Intermediate Rock Climbing course member will have climbed outside before and be a competent belayer. You will ideally have completed a Beyond the Edge Rock Climbing Introduction course or have learnt the basics elsewhere.
Who is it for ?
Intermediate rock climbing builds your rock climbing skills and looks at anchors and belay building so that you can become a safe second. It’s brilliant as a refresher course if you haven’t been climbing for a while or frequently used as a build up to a Learn to Lead trad rock climbs course.
By the end of an intermediate climbing course you will be able to identify routes appropriate to your ability, set up your own top ropes and then climb the route on top rope.
Intermediate Rock Climbing – Course Overview
The intermediate rock climbing course builds on your existing climbing knowledge. Over the two action packed days we make sure everyone understands how to place trad gear (nuts, hens, cams etc) and build safe belays, as once you have nailed that, a lifetime of your own climbing awaits!
As with all our courses if you are not sure which one would suit you best, give the office a call and we will steer you to the most appropriate one.
Beyond the Edge are one of the UKs most experienced providers of mountain training courses and they are both highly informative and run by hugely experienced trainers. Importantly in our opinion, they are also fun and run in a friendly manner. We take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further courses.
Intermediate Rock Climbing – Course Format
The two days are flexible to get the best out of the weather and match what we do to your individual ambitions. We will visit at least two different crags so you get a taste of the amazing rock climbing the Peak District has on offer.
After introductions at 9am and over a cuppa, we plan the day. We normally revise what you know already to make sure everything is safe, before extending you knowledge, so don’t worry if you are rusty.
Over the two days we will cover:
- Guide book use and access to crags
- Movement and balance in the vertical realm
- Placing traditional gear to create belays
- Construction of top rope systems
- Safe belaying (from the top and the bottom)
- Abseiling with a prussik
- Simple problem avoidance and solving
We finish at about 1630 on Day 1 and about 1600 on Day 2.
