Alpkit Compass

Review of Alpkit Compass

Alex

This is a review of the Alpkit Compass, a cheaper alternative to the popular Silva Type 4. I’ve been using Silva compasses consistently throughout my life in the outdoors. First as a teenager learning to navigate in the hills and mountains. Then subsequently all throughout my career as an Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Instructor; on…

Two Nature Books for Leaders

Alex

I was recently thinking about my Mountain Leader assessment (way back in the mists of time) and that I have no recollection of at any point being asked any questions about the environment or about any flora or fauna. It wasn’t until five years later while attending my MIA training and then assessment did I…

Who are the BMC?

Harriet Whiteley

The BMC participation statements is on the wall in the climbing wall, their insurance is advertised in the magazines, they make the occasional comical viral video and they’re even talking about bank holiday congestion on the BBC. For many climbers, hillwalkers and scramblers, it can feel like that’s the extent of their relationship with the…

Harriet Whiteley

The excitement of the festive season has subsided, dry January is starting to wear you down and the days still feel all too short. How oh how do you make your way through the longest month of the year? Plan a rock climbing trip of course! Escape London, escape Manchester, escape your boss or escape…

Preparing for Less Daylight

Alex

Preparing for Less Daylight Autumn is a fantastic time to be in the mountains. Colours erupt and flame across the landscape, light softens and shadows lengthen giving contrast and counterpoint to valleys and hollows brimming with mist. The onset of winter makes fleeting, shorter days like this seem all the more precious and an urgency…

Master the art of belaying

Harriet Whiteley

Climbers get all the glory. They stand on the podiums, feature in the climbing films and get the sponsorship deals. But don’t be fooled; the true art worth mastering is not climbing, it’s belaying. You know a good belayer when you climb with one. A good belayer is the kind of person who fills you…

Pulling on You’ve checked RAD, packed your kit and walked to the crag, finally it’s time to get some real rock climbing done. Hang on, where are all the holds? Which ones do you use? Where are the crash pads and the permadraws? Rock climbing outdoors presents its own challenges and can be hard to…

Getting into Rock Climbing Outdoors Part 2

Alex

The law of the crag You’ve settled on your destination and you’re on the way to the crag. Sorted. But before you rock up and pull on, make sure your crag etiquette and behaviour is up to scratch.  Stuff that’s perfectly acceptable at the climbing wall may not be good practice at crag. This is…

Getting into Rock Climbing Outdoors Part 1

Chris Allewell

Part 1: Couch to crag Rock Climbing outdoors is incredibly exciting and rewarding, and logistically-speaking there’s a little more to it than climbing at a purpose-built climbing wall. Working out where you’re going and how you’re getting there are good starting points, but there are loads of extra things you can do to ensure a…

What is CPD and why is it important? CPD means c What is CPD and why is it important?

CPD means continued professional/personal development. For qualified and aspirant leaders it helps to keep your skills fresh and demonstrate to others (including employers) that you are passionate about good practice, good standards and professionalism.

It's something you might also think about doing for your own personal growth and safety, whether you're heading out as a leader or an individual.

CPD might be reading and listening to books, heading out with friends to practise night nav or attending a workshop. Workshops are great spaces to share skills, ask questions and reflect on previous experiences.

We offer CPD workshops for both personal and professional development, these include:

🌼🐦Environmental workshops
🏥Advanced/Expedition First Aid
🏥Outdoor First Aid
🧗Problem Solving and Self-Rescue for climbers
🌄 ML/HML nav refresher
🧭NNAS tutor award

We trained 3 cohorts of Hill and Moorland Leaders, a cohort of CWDIs and a group of NNAS Gold navigators.

We enjoyed rain and shine on our Peak District Guided walking holiday whilst Claire and James opted for guaranteed sun in Finale Ligure (Italy).

Alex found fungi in the woods, Hati found a particularly interesting owl pellet and Chris found a Violet Oil Beetle.

Most importantly, no sandwiches were eaten by sheep (which was on the cards from a little while). 🥪🐑

What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mounta What can you expect from our Toubkal Winter Mountaineering week?

A quick winter hit, featuring easily accessible high alpine walking, inspiring mountains, and the warm welcoming Berber culture.
You’ll be with one of our core team, accompanied by a local english speaking guide. You’ll start by refreshing and refining winter skills before exploring the 4000m peaks around our high mountain refuge.

Generally our itinerary is flexible (according to the weather - as always!) but you can expect something that looks like this…

Day 1 - Arrive Marrakech and transfer to Imlil (approx 2 hours). Overnight in gîte.
Day 2 – Acclimatisation trek in mountains surrounding Imlil. Overnight in gîte.
Day 3 – Ascend to refuge at 3207m. A slow walk that takes between 5-7 hours depending on conditions. Mules and porters will carry the group’s equipment and we’ll stay overnight at the refuge.
Day 4 – Winter skills refresher and acclimatisation. Another night in the refuge.
Day 5 – Climb Toubkal or another 4000m peak. Another night in the refuge.
Day 6 – Another day of winter fun. Toubkal if not climbed yesterday or another summit eg Ras n’ Ouanoukrim (4088m), Timesguida (4088m) and plenty of others! Return to Imlil.
Day 7 – Transfer to Marrakech in the morning with an afternoon at leisure to explore Marrakech. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8 – Transfer to airport and fly home. Often our flights are in the early afternoon allowing us to further explore Marrakech before our flight.

Our Rock Climbing Camps are a summer holiday highl Our Rock Climbing Camps are a summer holiday highlight, running throughout July and August for young people aged 14 - 17.

🧗Every year new cohorts of young climbers join us to climb, boulder, camp and build friendships with new climbing partners ready for the next adventure. The Peak District is a climbing hub with some of the best crags, boulders and routes in the country.

⛺The camp is residential at a campsite (with hot showers) at the base of Stanage Edge in the Peak District. All food is provided by us and prepared by the young people under our supervision. Our instructors are on site at all times, making this an ideal first camp experience for young people.

🚄The camp runs from Monday - Friday and young people can get here by train to Hathersage or get dropped off.

We recently ran our first Managing Fear of Heights We recently ran our first Managing Fear of Heights course in collaboration with psychologist, therapist and coach @davidfongpsychology . Rather than wax lyrical about how it went we thought we'd share some feedback from participants instead.

For some it might be a reluctance to use an escalator, for others, it might be that burning desire to conquer that rocky ridge – if only it wasn’t so steep… It doesn’t matter what your starting point is...

Our Managing Your Fear of Heights course is about understanding fear as a completely natural and appropriate response and learning how to manage the irrational element and celebrate the rational – it keeps us safe!

Our next course runs on Saturday 13 - Sunday 14 September. Learn more about it on our website (link in bio).
