It comes for all of us…

Whether you lead groups in lowlands, hills, moorland, crags or mountains, every three years we all come to the panicked realisation that our Outdoor First Aid certificates have reached their expiration date. Frantic, we hastily book a course with whichever provider can offer us the soonest and most convenient date. It is a ritual we all practise, but not one any of us particularly look forward to!

Delivering CPR on an outdoor first aid course in the peak District

A few years ago we started running our own outdoor first aid courses that meet NGB requirements. They’re practical and engaging because that is the best way for you to learn and build confidence in first aid skills.

One-by-one as our previous certificates expire, the Beyond the Edge team have enjoyed (rather than endured!) recertifying as Outdoor First Aiders. Of course we would say how wonderful our courses are… fortunately you don’t just have to take our word for it as Sarah has kindly written us an extended review. You can read her thoughts below…

Sarah’s Outdoor First Aid Course with Beyond the Edge

This is the first time that I have done an Outdoor First Aid Course with Beyond the Edge and I have to say it the most enjoying and insightful two-day course I have done.

Beyond the Edge make you feel so welcome and part of the team as soon as you arrive. The course was so well structured and gave you an in-depth theoretical and practical hands on experience throughout the two days.

Chris who ran the course has a wealth of knowledge about accidents, injuries that could occur on the mountain due to being part of the Edale Mountain Rescue team, which enabled us to gain an insight into real life events that could occur on a walk, expedition in the hills or mountains this was invaluable.

It is amazing how a bit of knowledge can make a huge difference to a casualty. This course covers safety, assessment and treatments which was then applied to numerous practical scenarios that have occurred on the hills/mountains. I was so grateful for this because it allowed me to practise my skills which I had learnt and how I would deal with certain situations if they arose being more equipped and prepared.

I would highly recommend this course to anyone venturing into the outdoors either solo or with a group.

Chris is an excellent teacher and instructor and I couldn’t recommend him highly enough. I came away much more confident in my ability to help a casualty in the outdoors.

Due to my experience with Beyond the Edge I will be booking myself on to the Expedition and Advanced First aid course.

Thanks Sarah!

As well as being practical and engaging, our Outdoor First Aid course is recognised by Mountain Training, Paddle UK, RYA, British Caving Association, British Association of Snowsports Instructors, Scouts and many other governing and professional bodies as fulfilling the requirements for 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid course. The course has been built from the ground up using decades of experience of actually being at the sharp end in emergency situations in outdoor, remote and extreme environments. So rather than booking in a frantic haze, consider attending one of our Outdoor First Aid courses next time that 3 year panic sets in!

The learn to lead trad course exceeded my expectations. Plenty of practice after some short lessons, James was a brilliant instructor throughout who adapted the course to the goals and level of each student, gave excellent advice to us as individuals and the group, and has offered substantial after care as we consolidate the course material by leading climbs in our own time. Would recommend to anyone.

I have just completed the two day Hill Skills course and I can’t recommend it more highly. I’ve been hiking for years and have even done serious hikes like the three peaks, Dolomites and in Austria, but like many I’ve been relying on apps and my phone and knew it was really time to build a proper foundation for my hiking skills. I was blown away by how much I learned from our brilliant instructor Graham. From getting confident with map reading and plotting routes off the trails, to learning about mountain rescue and what to do if things go wrong, this course was packed with amazing info and hands on practical skills. I’ll now be looking to complete my Lowland Leader accreditation and will definitely be back to Beyond the Edge. Thanks again!

My wife and I recently attended a first aid course with Beyond the Edge, and it was an excellent experience from beginning to end. Caroline led the course brilliantly. She was knowledgeable, welcoming and engaging, and explained everything clearly while keeping the training practical, interesting and easy to remember. The relaxed and supportive atmosphere made it comfortable to participate, practise the skills and ask questions. I left feeling much more knowledgeable and confident about responding to an emergency. It was also a pleasure meeting Chris, who made me feel very welcome, and our certificates were sent through promptly after the course. I would highly recommend Beyond the Edge to anyone looking for professional, practical and genuinely enjoyable first aid training.

Just completed my RCI Training with Beyond the Edge, and my nerves were put at ease instantly. Our course leaders Alex, James and Chris ran the training in a very relaxed manner, no question was a stupid question, and they are genuinely exited to encourage new people into the outdoor world, and i have left with a full suitcase of new skills, knowledge and enjoyment. Great company to start your outdoor qualification journey with!

I attended a hill skills course with Beyond the Edge. Delivery was at a sensible steady pace, a few hours in the ‘classroom’ with nav essentials then out to put these into practice and further skills like using emergency shelters, compass work & pacing. A lot covered in 2 days. Thoroughly recommend this course if you’re wanting to get more from your days out in the hills. Thank you Beyond the Edge.

Friendly staff and great location. I was made to feel totally safe and at ease with the whole two day training course and I was worried being a middle aged female. Would definitely go back to complete my assessment with Beyond the Edge.

Lowland Leader Training After an amazing weekend of training with Chris (Instructor) and our group, I have so much newfound knowledge to absorb, practise, and utilise. The knowledge shared was excellent, and the skills were presented in a clear, easy-to-absorb format. I would highly recommend Beyond The Edge. I will be back to complete my First Aid and Lowland Leader Assessment course.

I completed a two day Hill Skills course with Alex leading and Nigel assisting. There were seven of us with a range of experience and confidence. Alex and Nigel set a lovely tone with it being friendly, relaxed, interesting, and encouraging. We spent a couple of hours both mornings familiarising ourselves with the equipment and testing it out. Then went for a walk that utilised and challenged those skills. Everyone was really friendly and helpful throughout. If you don't know what taking a bearing is, an OS reference, how (or why) to use an emergency shelter, or pacing is, or know the difference between a path or a right of way on a map, then this course is for you.
