The clocks have gone back and suddenly the hills feel a little bit more intimidating. It’s colder, the winds bite more fiercely and of course it gets dark earlier and earlier as we approach the winter solstice.
But careful planning and packing can enable us to safely enjoy the hills right through the winter months.
Here are Alex’s tips for safer hill walking and trekking from November to April.

Boots and Gaiters

Consider waxing your leather boots or spraying your synthetics in preparation for wetter walking conditions. The lightweight boots I’ve been tromping about in over the summer are definitely less waterproof and feel insecure on wet and muddy steep terrain. Wear a good quality three season hillwalking boot A beefier boot with also keep your feet warmer. Go for a Chucky vibram sole. Gaiters will keep your feet dryer for longer.

Waterproofs

I like a longer thicker waterproof jacket for winter hill walking. A good hood is essential. Over trousers with braces are comfier for all day use. I’ll be packing my Patagonia Triolet, it’s cut to fit over insulation layers and has a great hood. The Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket is another good choice, it’s a well fitting Gore-tex jacket with a superb hood.

Mountain Equipment Lhotse Jacket

Gloves

I always carry at least two of pairs of gloves. A thin stretchy fleece glove for lower down and then some good quality warmer gloves for the hill and mountain tops. Mountain Equipment Guide Gloves are a good all round glove that live in my pack throughout the colder months. Hati is a big fan of the Alpkit Gabbros. In bad weather I’ll definitely carry a third thick pair of gloves or even mitts to wear if the others get wet.

Hats

A wooly hat or beanie is a vital addition to your kit in cold and windy conditions. A buff a great as a neck warmer but also good as a lighter weight hat or head band.

Flask

A hot drink is a nice morale booster for winter walking. Another option is to carry a compact stove that is wind resistant and boils very quickly. Just make sure you don’t sit around too long getting cold waiting for your stove to boil. The MSR Reactor is excellent, very very fast boiling and very wind resistant.

Head torch

Absolutely essential and make sure you have spare batteries. I use a Petzl Actik. I keep it in a small dry bag with the spare batteries in a small ziplock bag. Other popular and reliable brands are Alpkit and Black Diamond.

Petzl Actik

Spare Map and Compass

Maps blow away and compasses break or malfunction. Carry spares. The BMC Mountain Maps are light and waterproof and cover a wider area than most Ordnance Survey maps and consequently make excellent spare maps that can live in the bottom of your pack just in case your main map blows away.

Fully charged phone and separate battery pack

It’s essential to keep some charge in your phone in case you need to call for help. Preserve the battery on the hill by switching to airplane mode and resist the temptation to constantly use it for navigation. A battery pack like the Alpkit Boost is a very wise investment. Download the OS Locate app.

Belay Jacket

The term comes from winter climbing where a synthetically insulated jacket is carried for the climber to wear while belaying. These types of jacket are great for walking too. The great thing about then is that you can wear it over the top of your waterproofs if you stop for a break. Also very useful if you need to wait for help or are static for long periods. Mountain Equipment Fitzroy is good example.

Group Shelter

Another essential. None of the Beyond the Edge instructors would consider going out without one. A life saver in an emergency and very cosy for a lunch break in bad wether. Rab make some good lightweight versions and the Alpkit shelters are good value for money. Go for a 4-6 person version as a minimum size, the smaller ones are a bit too cramped for everyday use.

Pack

A bigger pack will enable you carry these extra bits of kit and it will be easier to reach down inside and find your waterproof or belay jacket. Consider 35L + as a minimum. If you’re considering getting into winter mountaineering 40 + will be a better choice.

Trekking Pole

One or two trekking poles will aid stability in windy conditions. I’ll take one for day walks but two if I’m carrying a heavier load or walking in icy or snowy conditions. Also good for probing boggy sections. Outside in Hathersage offer a great range.

Training

If you’re unsure of your abilities or are lacking confidence in your navigational skills then consider getting some expert help. A navigation course or a hill or mountain skills weekend can really boost your abilities and enable more ambitious ventures.

Top team really! Completed my RCI training with Alex and Chris. Learned a ton. Completed my RCI assessment with Alex, learned even more. Then came back for outdoor first aid refresher with Chris and had an opportunity to learn from a real mountain rescuer who had a wealth of real life experience and knowledge. 10/10

I completed a two day Hill Skills course with Alex leading and Nigel assisting. There were seven of us with a range of experience and confidence. Alex and Nigel set a lovely tone with it being friendly, relaxed, interesting, and encouraging. We spent a couple of hours both mornings familiarising ourselves with the equipment and testing it out. Then went for a walk that utilised and challenged those skills. Everyone was really friendly and helpful throughout. If you don't know what taking a bearing is, an OS reference, how (or why) to use an emergency shelter, or pacing is, or know the difference between a path or a right of way on a map, then this course is for you. I just completed a two day Lowland Leader training course and used all of the skills from the Hill Skills on it!

I recently attended a NNAS silver award. The course was well organised from pre-course contact right through the two days. Claire who instructed the course was friendly, informative, and made sure I maximised my learning and experience for the weekend. Alex also instructed the second day and was equally great. I'd have no hesitation in attending another course with Beyond the edge and recommending them to others.

I did the two day climbing and rope skills course with Alex. It was excellent in every way. His immense experience and knowledge combined with a very patient approach and encouraging attitude delivered a course that was great fun, and full of first class learning. I look forward to doing the remainder of the trad course later this year. 2 months later I then did the two day learn to trad course with James. Again this course was excellent in every way. I look forward to doing more courses such as the multi pitch in Wales.

The learn to lead trad course exceeded my expectations. Plenty of practice after some short lessons, James was a brilliant instructor throughout who adapted the course to the goals and level of each student, gave excellent advice to us as individuals and the group, and has offered substantial after care as we consolidate the course material by leading climbs in our own time. Would recommend to anyone.

I have just completed the two day Hill Skills course and I can’t recommend it more highly. I’ve been hiking for years and have even done serious hikes like the three peaks, Dolomites and in Austria, but like many I’ve been relying on apps and my phone and knew it was really time to build a proper foundation for my hiking skills. I was blown away by how much I learned from our brilliant instructor Graham. From getting confident with map reading and plotting routes off the trails, to learning about mountain rescue and what to do if things go wrong, this course was packed with amazing info and hands on practical skills. I’ll now be looking to complete my Lowland Leader accreditation and will definitely be back to Beyond the Edge. Thanks again!

My wife and I recently attended a first aid course with Beyond the Edge, and it was an excellent experience from beginning to end. Caroline led the course brilliantly. She was knowledgeable, welcoming and engaging, and explained everything clearly while keeping the training practical, interesting and easy to remember. The relaxed and supportive atmosphere made it comfortable to participate, practise the skills and ask questions. I left feeling much more knowledgeable and confident about responding to an emergency. It was also a pleasure meeting Chris, who made me feel very welcome, and our certificates were sent through promptly after the course. I would highly recommend Beyond the Edge to anyone looking for professional, practical and genuinely enjoyable first aid training.

Just completed my RCI Training with Beyond the Edge, and my nerves were put at ease instantly. Our course leaders Alex, James and Chris ran the training in a very relaxed manner, no question was a stupid question, and they are genuinely exited to encourage new people into the outdoor world, and i have left with a full suitcase of new skills, knowledge and enjoyment. Great company to start your outdoor qualification journey with!
