Edale Skyline Challenge

Peak District

from £55

Approx 10 hours

Max. Ratio:

The Edale Skyline is a fantastic 20 mile ish tour around the tops that surround the picturesque village of Edale. Easy walking (or running) with no sharp ridges or huge ascents make it an ideal first longer distance challenge walk or run.

A challenge walk is a great way to meet like minded folk and, as each group is led by an expert local guide, not worry about navigating the route or the logistics. You will also have the opportunity to learn something about our amazing home along the way.

Beyond the Edge are one of the most experienced providers of mountain adventures in the UK. Our small team of highly qualified and hugely experienced instructors all think its important that the event is run in a fun and friendly manner. We all take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further challenge walks, events and courses.

Our Open itineraries follow a variant of the standard Edale Skyline race route (2hrs 34 to beat if you want to try) starting and finishing in Hope. For bespoke groups we can start in Edale or increase the challenge with a winter round if required. An average walking group will complete the challenge in between seven and ten hours.

For runners, we offer the Edale Skyline as a guided run with some support (at Mam Nic).

Meeting Point

We meet at 08:30 in Hope. This has good train links to Sheffield and Manchester and ample parking.

Event Format

After meeting your guide for the day, we do a quick equipment check and safety brief before heading off.
We normally start the Skyline challenge by heading up Lose Hill and traverse the famous Great Ridge, voted one of the UK’s top ten favourite walks. From the end of the ridge at the popular viewpoint of Mam Tor and its ancient hill fort we look down into Edale before crossing our only road of the day and heading along Rushup Edge towards Brown Knoll. From here we broach the Kinder Plateau and this, the wildest and highest part of the walk and gives impressive views over Kinder Scout and its weird rock formations. If the mist descends they can be quite spooky and you will be glad you are with an expert guide as its not unusual to get lost!
From Kinder the end is in sight, but still a few hours away as we head along the edge path and down past Crookstone barn and onto Win Hill.
The summit of Win Hill at 463 metres marks the end of all the climbing and we turn and head down into the valley with thoughts of a warm drink or something stronger easing our aching muscles.

Equipment Required

A detailed equipment list is contained in the joining instructions. Essentially, you need to be self sufficient for a day in the hills. We will provide all the group safety equipment.

Accommodation Options

This Beyond the Edge challenge is normally non-residential to allow you to select between a thermarest or 5 star hotel as you require. There is lots of accommodation in the Hope Valley and we recommend The Sir William hotel which offers BtE clients a discounted rate. Other options are listed on our Accommodation page. For bespoke events if you would like us to arrange accommodation, just let us know.

You don’t have to be super fit to enjoy this challenge. To walk around the Skyline in 10 hours a good general fitness is quite sufficient. Obviously the fitter you are the the easier it is. Some handy hints for improving your fitness are contained in the joining instructions.
