Become a Qualified Bouldering Wall Instructor

The Mountain Training Bouldering Wall Instructor is the bouldering qualification for experienced boulderers who want to supervise and teach groups using artificial bouldering walls.

The qualification allows successful candidates to:

• Teach bouldering skills
• Safely manage individuals and groups while bouldering
• Work on indoor artificial bouldering structures
• Work on outdoor artificial bouldering structures

It does not qualify you to supervise roped climbing or instruct people on natural outdoor boulders or crags. Those activities fall under other Mountain Training qualifications, like the Climbing Wall Instructor and Rock Climbing Instructor.

Bouldering Wall Instructor Training

The Bouldering Wall Instructor Training course is the practical training stage of the qualification.

Training with Beyond the Edge is normally completed in one day and covers subjects such as personal bouldering skills, safe practice, instructor responsibilities, leadership and decision-making, supervising groups and other staff, and bouldering wall etiquette.

Bouldering Wall Instructor Assessment

After training and an appropriate period of consolidation, the Bouldering Wall Instructor Assessment is the final stage required to gain the qualification.

Mountain Training specifies a minimum assessment duration of three hours. You will need to demonstrate your personal bouldering competency alongside your ability to plan, manage and deliver a safe and effective bouldering session.

Who Is the Bouldering Wall Instructor Qualification For?

The Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification is aimed at experienced boulderers who want to instruct other people on artificial bouldering walls.

It’s a strong option for anyone looking at roles such as bouldering wall staff or session leaders, climbing centres, or clubs and schools delivering bouldering sessions.

The minimum age for BWI training is 16, but you need to be at least 18 to complete the assessment.

Bouldering Wall Instructor Training Requirements

There are minimum experience requirements to be able to begin this bouldering qualification, since the BWI is not designed as an introduction to bouldering.

Before registering, Mountain Training states that you must:

• Be at least 16 years old
• Have at least three months of experience using indoor or artificial bouldering walls, including a major public bouldering centre
• Have an interest in bouldering and supervising groups
• Be a member, individually or through a club, of the BMC, Mountaineering Ireland or Mountaineering Scotland
• Create a Mountain Training account and register for the Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification

Mountain Training currently charges £69 to register for the qualification.

Before signing up for BWI training, you should have recorded on Mountain Training’s DLOG:

• Visits to at least three different indoor or artificial bouldering walls
• At least 15 separate bouldering-wall visits
• Experience at a major public bouldering centre
• Personal bouldering at V2 or above

These are minimum requirements rather than targets. Arriving with more bouldering experience will give you a head start during training.

What Does Bouldering Wall Instructor Training Cover?

Mountain Training splits the Bouldering Wall Instructor syllabus into four sections:

• Technical Competence: Personal bouldering skills and the background knowledge that are required to instruct effectively.
• Management and Decision-Making: Understanding instructor responsibilities, planning, leadership, decision-making, hazards, and emergency procedures.
• Teaching and Learning Skills: How to demonstrate skills, communicate effectively and help other people learn and develop.
• The Climbing Environment: Bouldering etiquette and ethics alongside understanding how artificial climbing facilities operate and how instructors should interact with other wall users.

Our Bouldering Wall Instructor Training is made to be as practical as possible, so you’ll spend a lot of the day exploring these subjects in the bouldering-wall environment rather than sitting in a classroom.

Consolidation Between Training and Assessment

After training, you enter a consolidation period to build experience and put your new skills to practice. Mountain Training recommends that you allow three months between training and assessment.

During this period, you should broaden your personal bouldering experience and gain experience assisting with instructed sessions.

Your trainer will also provide feedback on your performance and areas to develop before assessment.

Bouldering Wall Instructor Assessment Requirements

The experience requirements increase substantially before assessment.

According to the current Mountain Training BWI requirements, before attending an assessment you must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Have completed Bouldering Wall Instructor training or received an exemption from Mountain Training
• Be familiar with the BWI syllabus
• Have logged at least 30 personal climbing visits
• Have visited at least three different indoor or artificial bouldering venues
• Boulder proficiently at V2
• Have assisted with at least 10 instructed bouldering sessions
• Have assisted at a minimum of two different indoor or artificial bouldering venues, including a large public facility
• Have recorded personal reflective comments on DLOG for at least five of those instructed sessions
• Have observed an additional two sessions run by different instructors
• Hold a current first-aid certificate gained through an in-person course involving at least one full day of instruction, or equivalent, and including an element of assessment

Bouldering Qualification FAQs

What Qualifications Do You Need to Teach Rock Climbing?

This depends on where and what you want to teach.

For teaching bouldering on artificial structures, the Bouldering Wall Instructor is the relevant qualification.

For roped climbing on artificial walls, look at the Climbing Wall Instructor qualification. For teaching appropriate forms of rock climbing on natural crags, the Rock Climbing Instructor qualification is generally the relevant Mountain Training pathway.

Can a Bouldering Wall Instructor Teach Outdoor Bouldering?

Only on artificial outdoor bouldering structures.

The Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification does not cover instructing people on natural boulders. For natural rock, you will need appropriate competence and should take a look at qualifications such as the Rock Climbing Instructor, depending on the activity you intend to deliver.

Can a Bouldering Wall Instructor Teach Roped Climbing?

No. Teaching roped climbing is excluded from the Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification.

If you want to work with roped climbing on artificial walls, the Climbing Wall Instructor is the more appropriate pathway.

How Long Does the Bouldering Wall Instructor Qualification Take?

The training itself requires at least seven hours of contact time and is normally delivered by Beyond the Edge as a one-day course.

Mountain Training then expects candidates to complete a period of consolidation before assessment, advised to be at least three months.

The final assessment requires a minimum of three hours.

Do I Need First Aid for Bouldering Wall Instructor Training?

You do not need the BWI assessment-level first-aid certificate simply to attend training.

Before assessment, however, Mountain Training requires a current first-aid certificate gained through an in-person course involving at least one full day of instruction, or equivalent, with an element of assessment.
