Scotland’s West Coast walks

A week of stunning walks along the West Coast of Scotland. Staying in the historic and spectacular Glencoe, we have incredible views from the door. We enjoy some of the many classic Munros of the area, and as with all of our walks and treks we also delve into the social and natural history that has shaped this incredible area. From the massacre of Glencoe, and the myths of the glacier carved hidden valley to the sound of the Ptarmigan, we aim to give you a genuine love of the area, equal to ours.

Beyond the Edge are one of the UKs most experienced providers of mountain experiences and courses. All of our small team are both hugely experienced and highly qualified and will make the week fun, friendly and highly informative. We take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further adventures and courses.

Whilst in no way compulsory, we try and eat together in the evening. After the three course dinner we often organise a chat about the local area or inspire ourselves with tales from overseas adventures. It’s all part of belonging to the Beyond the Edge family.

As our experienced team are also top class instructors we are happy to help you learn some navigation or other skills as we go along.

Scotland’s West Coast Walks – Format

We meet on the Sunday evening to say hello and make sure everyone is ready and raring to go for the Monday. Over dinner we get to know one another and discuss the week and of course the all important weather!

In outline:
Day 1 – After looking at the weather and a quick session on equipment and emergency procedures we hatch our plan for the day. We may head up Sgorr na Ciche (Pap of Glencoe) with its short easy scramble at the very top giving access to breathtaking views down Loch Leven.

Day 2 – Depending on the weather, we may try and head for Ben Nevis. With an early start and a following wind, the Carn Mor Dearg Arete may be an option, alternatively a circuit of the mountain from Coire Leis. Whichever option we choose its a big climb from sea level to 1344m. Hopefully the views will be worth it.

Day 3 – Perhaps we could head up Glencoe to Buaichille Etive Mor (The great shepherd of Etive). Weaving through its rocky ramparts to the summit and its intriguing ridge onto Stop na Broige.

Day 4 – Bidean nam Bian could be a suitable objective for today. The steeper circuit takes in Gearr Aonach. We start the walk heading into the Lost Valley, rumoured to be the hiding place for cattle rustled by the clan MacDonald from neighbouring clans. We escape its steep sides by a canny little zig zag through the rocks and head along the broad ridge of Gearr Aonach and take in Stop Coire nan Lochan on the way.

Day 5 – With our last day it’s often hard to decide where to go. We could opt to try the Ballachulish horseshoe, head into the Mamores or an easier day on Buaichille Etive Beag. There certainly isn’t a shortage of options and like all days we match the route to the weather and the groups desires.
