Mountain Skills Course

During two fun and action packed days on the Mountain Skills course, we will equip with the skills and knowledge to safely undertake mountain walks in the upland areas of the UK.

Highly qualified and experienced instructors, guide your learning throughout the mountain skills course, so you come away confident to undertake your own adventures.

Who is it for ?

A small amount of experience of hill walking or navigation is required prior to a mountain skills course. This might be on one of our Hill Skills Courses or a navigation course. You don’t need to be a regular hillwalker, but having some idea of how to use a map and walk in the mountains will allow you to get the most out of the course.

Mountain Skills – Course Overview

The two day Mountain Skills course is nationally accredited by Mountain Training and Beyond the Edge are one of the UKs most experienced providers of Mountain Training courses.

Our courses are both highly informative and run by hugely experienced trainers. Importantly in our opinion, they are also fun and run in a friendly manner. We take great pride in the very high percentage of individuals who return for further courses.

Summer Mountain Skills – Course Format

The course is flexible so that we get the most learning out of the prevailing weather conditions.

Over the two days we will cover the range of Mountain skills required to be safe;
Planning – how to successfully plan a walk in the mountains in the UK or Ireland.
Walking skills – what things should you consider while out walking and what can make life easier (pace, nutrition, movement skills, steep ground etc.).
Clothing and equipment – being suitably dressed and equipped can make the difference between a great day out and a complete disaster.
Weather – how it affects the mountains and your day out.
Navigation in the mountains – everything from selecting a compass and using a map to navigation in poor visibility and an intro to GPS.
Environmental knowledge – how to minimise your impact on the hill, information on good practice and useful organisations.
Hazards and emergency procedures in the mountains – how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency.
