Beyond the Edge are only running courses for groups and individuals this year and are not advertising 'open ' courses. However, instructors will be in the hopefully frozen North throughout the winter months, so if you are interested please contact the office (email)

Winter Mountain Skills. A Weekend Training Course - Based In Scotland

An introduction to the skills and techniques necessary for safe enjoyment of the mountains in winter. Below is a proposed programme, the sequence of events is open to change and revision according to the weather, conditions in the mountains and client ability or any other unforeseen circumstances. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this course.

Fri        Evening – Introduction and Equipment check

Sat       A full day out looking at the skills required for safe movement over snow and ice.

§ Personal Equipment & Clothing

§ Use of Ice Axe & Crampons

§ The Winter Environment

§ Self Arrest

§ Step kicking & cutting

Evening Lecture - Weather and Avalanche Forecasts 

Sun      Another full day out building on the skills of Saturday

§ Winter Navigation

§ Emphasising and reinforcing all the skills and techniques

§ Avalanche Prediction & Avoidance

§ Emergency Snow Holes

To introduce you to the skills and techniques necessary for safe mountain winter enjoyment. The exact programme will be modified to meet the needs of our clients. A reasonable level of fitness is required in order to get the most from this course

Wed    The skills required for ascending and descending steeper ground

§ Rope Work

Thu     Option Day – group can choose a classic mountain walk or a gully climb where further skills will be taught.

Fri      Consolidation Day – a full day out on the mountain using skills learnt during the week.
