The National Award accredited by the Mountain Leader Training Board the course aims to enable participants to organise single pitch introductory climbing sessions, with attention to safety, enjoyment and maximum activity of students, whilst respecting the rights of other crag users. It is designed specifically for people involved in introducing beginners / novices to rock climbing. The programme includes a session at a climbing wall. Students should be experienced climbers, preferably with some experience of working with groups. To register with the scheme it is a requirement that you have been climbing for 12 months.

IMPORTANT - You will need to register with the relevant training board eg Mountain Leader Training England, Siabod Cottage, Capel Curig, Gwynedd, LL24 0ET, 01690 720314, www.mlte.org.

Day 1   9.00 Peak District Crag venue 1- Personal climbing competence

Introduction, purpose and objectives of the award. Collect logbooks

§ Safety chain and Fall factors

§ Equipment - ropes, helmets, harnesses, krabs, slings, belay devices, chocks and camming devices

§ Abseiling, fixed and retrievable abseils, use of various friction devices

§ Knots and Hitches

§ Anchors  - spikes, blocks, chocks and camming devices, threads, chockstones, trees, fixed equipment

§ Discussion of conservation and access issues

Candidates will be expected to have met the current requirements as set out by the MLTE and have completed a training course or have gained exemption. Logbooks should be sent to the assessor one week before the course commences. The assessors will aim to reduce to pressure of the assessment situation and introduce element of training so that clients can also further their knowledge.
