Navigation Skills (Introduction)    2 - Day Training Course

Based in the Peak District this course involves two practical days outdoors. You will learn to read a map, take bearings with a compass, use weather forecasts, choose the right equipment, plan suitable routes and know what to do in an emergency. Once basic principals have been learnt students will be encouraged to go at their own pace.

§ Naismith’s rule (adjusting for conditions and load)

§ Measuring distances

§ Aiming off and attack points

§ Micro navigation

§ Pacing (each individual will calculate their own pacing and have ample opportunity to practice)

§ Navigation using linear and contour features

§ Weather forecasts - accessing and use

§ Plan a route for the day

§ Route Selection - Route cards Escape routes

§ Practical mountain navigation using skills and techniques learnt

§ Each course participant will navigate sections of the route

Mountaineering Skills (SILVA)    2 - Day Training Course

This course has been designed for students involved in introducing others to the mountains, such as club committee members and trip leaders. In addition to improving your own personal mountaineering skills (in particular navigation), you will gain a better understanding of the issues involved in party leadership and group management. You should have been hill walking or mountaineering for at least 12 months, and will have a basic knowledge of how to use a map and compass. The course can be arranged at any venue to suit your requirements.

At the end of this course students will be able to;

§ Plan suitable walking routes for themselves or for a group that they are leading.

§ Navigate competently in the mountains in summer conditions, using a variety of techniques.

§ Navigate in darkness and fog or mist conditions.

§ Know what to do in an emergency or when unforeseen circumstances arise

17.00 Eve - Pre trip planning and call out guidelines, emergency procedures, mountain rescue, visiting new areas.

Day 2   9.00 Mountain Venue 2

A full mountain day - Practical mountain navigation using skills and techniques learnt. Each course participant will navigate sections of the route.

Price   £350.00 per group           Ratio   1 to 6

 

This course can be run at any time and at any venue to suit your requirements. It is also possible to attempt to cover the same topics in a single day. A suggested alteration in the winter months is to start the course later and run into the evening and experience night-navigation / coming off the hill in the dark.
