Training Course - 6-Days

The Mountain Leader award designed to promote the safe enjoyment of the hills and mountains. The scheme provides training and assessment in the technical and group management skills required by those who wish to lead groups in the mountains and hills of the UK other than in winter conditions. This six day training course will introduce participants to the skills that are required by a mountain leader.  The course will be based in the Peak District, with the expedition taking place in another UK mountain region.

Staff Meeting - Preparation for programme

Introductions - scheme, the programme, delegates and staff, expectations. Self - catering, no smoking etc. Collect in log books

Navigation - An indoor session looking at the basic techniques of navigation. Followed by a kit check before going onto the hill

Navigation on the hill (Peak District) - Setting and using maps of different scales. Basic navigation techniques

Weather forecasts and the British weather - an indoor session looking at the weather cycle and the effects of weather on our mountain days. Weather forecasting and sources of information

Mountain Hazards - Lightning, Flash floods, Hypothermia, effects of heat

Weather forecasts interpreting them for the day ahead.  Delegates predict what they expect to see from the days weather

Personal and group Equipment  (for the day)

Mountain Day - Navigation bearings, pacing, timings, micro-navigation and use of compass. Specific access and conservation issues e.g. land use, over use, grouse, sheep, mass tourism, quarrying and the limitations of the National Parks. The day will also include ‘Walking skills’ and will include varying types of terrain. Group Management

Preparation for expedition  - Food for expedition - shopping list. What to carry e.g. one rope per group and one First Aid Kit per group. Tent and stove check. Packing a rucksack. Choice of equipment. What to take and what not to take.

Day 4

Expedition continues. A full day to include Navigation, Group management, Conservation considerations,       Security on steep ground. A look at current methods of protecting group members on difficult terrain, from spotting on short steps to lowering, followed by an abseil descent by the leader. A short session on confidence roping will also be included. A look at potential hazards and how to avoid them (including River crossings).

Emergency procedures  - What to do when it all goes wrong. A review of your own ‘emergency procedures’ and a lecture on the Mountain Rescue services in the UK. The group will be encouraged to share their own experiences

The fee for the 6 - day course includes self - catering accommodation, all instruction, all training materials and in-course transport, however it does not include your food or your transport costs to and from the Peak District at the beginning and end of the course

Assessment Course, 6-Days

Candidates will be expected to have met the current requirements as set out by the MLTE and have completed a training course or have gained exemption. Logbooks should be sent to the assessor one week before the course commences. Candidates will have to demonstrate that they have the necessary skills and experience to satisfy the assessors that they meet the current requirements of the syllabus. The assessors will aim to reduce to pressure of the assessment situation and introduce element of training so that clients can also further their knowledge.

The course is based in the Peak District, with the 3-day expedition taking place in North Wales or the Lake District
